Who I Am To Become free essay sample
My sister Sabina is infuriatingly perfect. She graduated with a 4.0 GPA and received a full four year scholarship for volleyball; and so, in her junior year, when she called our mother to declare her major it was expected that she would be as perfect as ever, but it stumped my mother. You see, my sister has a bachelors in business, and my mother asked, without any attempt to soften the blow, ââ¬Å"Who in godââ¬â¢s name will that help?â⬠Any other suburban family would have rejoiced, and not just because they had someone to do their taxes. But my family can only be described asâ⬠¦ different. So, when asked the question of what higher education will do for me, my answer must follow suit. Every member of my family has a job of service. Grandma Helen used to say it was from our Catholic roots but one way or another they serve. We will write a custom essay sample on Who I Am To Become or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Uncle David is in the military, Aunt Jerry is a teacher, my mother was a Social Worker and is now a teacher, and my Grandmother was a nurse. In fact nearly every member of my family has been or is a teacher or nurse. And then of course my Great Grandmother who taught nursing. Nothing is respected more, and nothing is expected more, than helping those around you. My sister plans to use her business degree to manage a hospital. I suppose peer pressure takes a positive turn in this case. I hope to become a paramedic; and from there, possibly, a nurse. Because when I was twelve years old, I was diagnosed with an incurable disease. I remember the people who took care of me, I remember their heart felt enthusiasm. The feeling that I mattered, that I was not a burden, I was a necessity. Your career does not need to save the world, to help one person is to help the world. Ecology is my second interest. To hope for people in the future, always a hopeless optimist. So, why will I pursue a degree? The answer is simple: bees are dying. The earth is warming, glaciers are melting, one in seven children donââ¬â¢t know where their next meal is coming from, it is legal to discriminate against LGBTQ people in the majority of US states, and gun violence has now claimed more lives than all US wars. How do I have the audacity to look this world in the face and hope to change it? Because I remember the words my grandmother uttered to me in mass on Sunday: ââ¬Å"The kingdom of heaven resides in the hearts of man.â⬠It is my duty to do whatever I can to help other people, and the best way I can do that is to learn as much as I can. So, if I am to spend hundreds of thousands on a piece of paper it better change something in the world.

Why I Would Like to Do Extension English in Year 11 Essay Example
Why I Would Like to Do Extension English in Year 11 Essay Example Why I Would Like to Do Extension English in Year 11 Essay Why I Would Like to Do Extension English in Year 11 Essay Why I would like to do Extension English in Year 11 No one denies the importance of the English language in the present time as a global language. It is clear that the English language has become very dominant around the world. This is one reason among many other reasons why I would like to do Year 11 Extension English in my senior years. English has become an important part of my life as I use it every day through many mediums, for example socialising or communicating. The advantage of learning the universal language of English has offered me those opportunities and many more. This is because English is the language of the modern era, where many people use it in various fields of life such as political, business or travel. What potential employers want most is someone with motivation, intelligence, and proven ability to work. Studying Extension English shows that I have all of those qualities. To be able to broaden my English in many aspects I would be able to effectively apply it to my career which many employers now look for. I believe the Year 11 English Extension class is a valuable preparation for any number of further study opportunities. English is a subject I have most interest for; I become absorbed when reading Shakespeare and I love writing essays. I also believe if I had the great opportunity of being part of the distinguished class, I would have the better opportunity of developing the skills that employers consistently find valuable: communications, writing, and analysis for example. I not only enjoy English, but I find it be a vital part of my life because I use it every day through reading, writing and speaking. Extension English will be a challenge, not an obstacle in life. Through consistent hard work and adversity I wish to achieve an English degree in the future which will provide me the flexibility to pursue almost any ambition. I expect English Extension will offer very able students of English like myself an additional challenge and higher expectations; the challenges like managing high level critical analysis, and the expectation that we can work independently and in a self-directed manner whilst the rewarding and enjoyment we can benefit from. Moreover, I want to explore the diversity of the world, people, society and culture through the aspect of English and broaden my understanding of the world. I want to develop my knowledge on this because I think students who have a broad understanding of the world do well in their Higher School Certificate. I believe this is true, because many of the texts types given for a critical analysis or evaluation requires a general knowing of contemporary events or social and cultural changes in society or the world. The ability to communicate is very valuable for almost any job. Studying English teaches me how to write clearly and effectively. The many pieces of knowledge I may obtain from the Extension class can be extremely helpful and useful if I apply it into my career and life. My ideal and desired career is to be a solicitor. It is a career involved in the field of law, and often the fields of economics, political or business. For this type of career to be achieved on the long-term, it is essential I expand my studies into English because a large majority of what a solicitor does requires a substantial knowledge and education of English. It has become quite clear that English is a necessity today. We need it in different fields of life for many different purposes. The English language has become easier to learn more than ever before with the broader availability of many sources such as the Internet, books and educational institutes which have expanded around the world. My English learning experience during my years at high school have allowed me to better understand different text and their contexts, textual features and the different ways of communicating or interpreting text. I believe that this kind of experience positions me ideally to achieve a high standard of education and prospects. Should I be fortunate enough to join the Year 11 Extension English class, I believe that my growth as a student will continue as I work hard to become a perseverant member of its distinguished group. I would look forward to both the academic and personal growth that will come from being an active learner of that dynamic class. Thank you

ENERGY WEDGES Lab Report Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
ENERGY WEDGES - Lab Report Example Our group resorted to cutting carbon emission by half hence built an energy wedge that shows how the significant reduction is likely to take place if endorsed by the whole world. Our energy wedge begins with efficiency in transport as the basic of reducing carbon emission by 50%. The group believes that the current consumption of fuel by vehicles is likely to double from 30 mpg to 60mpg in the next 50 years. In order for saving to be achieved, there is need for the economy to shift from carbon energy sources to hybrid diesel engine technologies. Building efficiency comes second in the wedge. If technology is well utilized, buildings are supposed reduce emissions of carbon by 25% (Levy, 2010). This can be done through using solar heaters and using good insulators in construction of houses to reduce the demand of heat by electricity and other carbon sources. The next energy conservation strategy involves use of conservative measure in transport. Reducing face-to-face communication and using more electronic sources of communication will reduce the rate at which people travel (Neuhoff). This will lead to conservation of energy. The next wedge of conservation is efficiently producing electricity. Use of coal as a source of energy leads to production of about a fifth of worlds carbon. Reducing this b half in the next 50 years helps in solving this problem. Use of green sources as energy conservation form the next four level of our wedge. We realized that production is only likely to reduce by half so we opted for other means through which the remaining half of carbon emitted could be stored or reduced. This could be achieved by use of forest storage. Conserving forests ensures that trees absorb carbon emitted and use it as a source of food production. Soil is also another form in which carbon products can be stored. This can be supported by planting cover crops and preventing soil erosion. Use of

How does The Aeneid confirm values that Polybius described as the Essay
How does The Aeneid confirm values that Polybius described as the sources of Roman greatness or success - Essay Example Then, there was also gradual integration and absorption of conquered people into Rome. Lastly, they made a gradual expansion until they reached their borders. Polybius was a Greek historian who moved into Rome after the deportation of Greeks into Italy. He was therefore able to move to the Roman circles and witness major campaigns in the Mediterranean region. This gave him a great opportunity to analyze the principles beyond the Roman great success. In order to be successful, Rome avoided the culture of tyranny by having a mixed constitution in which in a single state there are three forms of government which include the monarchy in form of elected executives, aristocracy represented by the senate and democracy in form of popular assemblies (Phiz). The ambitions and human resources of Rome were growing at the same time. This made the leadership difficult to challenge for years. As a result Rome organized its plans well and developed a security complex which would enable it take rid of all its aggressors. The other success factors for the Roman Empire were fate, determination fate and selflessness on the part of its leaders. It will be wrong to ignore the fact that Rome had very great naval ships and strong navy personnel who could traverse many regions and put them under their captivity. At times they even relied on foreign mercenaries especially when they were dealing with overseas countries. The Aeneid is the Roman epic poem which talks about the founding legends of the Roman Empire. One such legend is Augustus a title given to Octavian signifying a savior who had brought peace to Rome by ending civil war. The Aeneid presents many parallels to the rise to power of Augustus for instance the civil war, the destruction of the Troy, the wanderings of the Aeneas, destruction of the republic and finally the creation of peace in the country. The Aeneid is therefore a pro-Augustan propaganda since Virgil uses it for propaganda about roman heroes to come and

Global Warming and its Effects on Society Essay Example for Free
Global Warming and its Effects on Society Essay Global warming or climate change is defined as any substantial change in the earthââ¬â¢s climate that can go on for an extended period of time. Global warming can cause an increase in the average temperature of the lower atmosphere. It can have different causes, but the one reason pinpointed as its cause is human interference, particularly the release of excessive amounts of greenhouse gases (EPA, 2006 cited in YeSeul Kim et al). There are several greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), water vapor, and fluorinated gases which act like a greenhouse on earth. Since the situation is that there are more greenhouse gases, then there would be a bigger chance of the heat trapped in the earthââ¬â¢s atmosphere. The earth cannot function in its present state if there are no occurring greenhouse gases, such as CO2, CH4, and water vapor. This means that without greenhouse gases, there will be no heat trapped in atmosphere, thus, the earth will become very cold. (NASA, 2002 as cited in YeSeul Kim et al). Scientists say that they have confirmed that climate change is caused by human activity (Scientists say global warming is undeniable). They have even presented their findings to the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington. Evidence is that when one looks at the oceans and the melting of the Arctic ice, it leaves no room for one to doubt that global warming is indeed happening today. It was even revealed by Tim Barnett of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography that new computer models that are able to look into ocean temperatures demonstrate the clearest sign that global warming is already happening (Scientists say global warming is undeniable). Scientists like Dr. Barnett say in no uncertain terms that the real place to look is in the ocean. His team has conducted numerous temperature readings made by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in order to calculate steady ocean warming. This report was published after the United Nations Kyoto Protocol composed of 141-nation environmental pact. The US team made use of solar warming and volcanic warming, in order to account for the measurements made. Even observing animals lead these scientists to conclude that there are clear effects on animals. Other researchers found clear effects on climate and animals. Ruth Curry of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution revealed that melting ice is now already changing the water cycle, which in turn affects ocean currents and then finally, the climate. There are also droughts happening in the west and in Greenlandââ¬â¢s ice cap which is composed of ice enough to raise sea levels by seven meters (Scientists say global warming is undeniable). A recent documentary on UK Channel 4 entitled ââ¬Å"The Great Global Warming Swindleâ⬠challenged the political view that global warming is caused by man-made factors. However, the movie says that the sun that is responsible for the current changes in the Earthââ¬â¢s temperature. The film shows the many opinions of scientists and climate experts that spur a growing dissent to the man-made theory. But these are all theories. Scientists have reminded us that the Sun determines our seasons, and has a bigger impact on the climate. German and Swiss scientists reveal that there is an increase in radiation from the sun that results in the present climate change. (Marshall). There are also researches saying that global warming is a lie which is propagated by the media. They reckon that the temperature estimates of past climates are just estimates. These have been estimated by scientists who try to prove that global warming exists. Some still maintain that global warming is just another conspiracy to bring Americans down (Global Warming: The Great Lie). In the end, the more important thing to remember is how to champion the environment when it is changing due to the global warming especially when there are confusing information about the real status of global warming and how people can cope up with it. (All Global Warming is Local-The Politics and Science of Regional Climate Impacts). Most of the critical issues that global warming involve is how to prepare for these climate changes. The U. N. ââ¬â¢s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released Climate Change 2007: The Physical Science Basis, Summary for Policymakers which is mainly a political document. Media is using this to gear up more sentiments among the people. (Bender, 2007). This is supposedly being edited to conform to the political agenda of the UN politicians. The document states that ââ¬Å"Changes made after acceptance by the Working Group or the Panel shall be those necessary to ensure consistency with the Summary for Policymakers or the Overview Chapter. â⬠And whether one likes it or not, the ââ¬Å"continued rapid cooling of the earth since WWII is in accord with the increase in global air pollution associated with industrialization, mechanization, urbanization and exploding populationâ⬠. (Reid Bryson, Global Ecology; Readings towards a rational strategy for Man, 1971 as cited in Bender). WORKS CITED All Global Warming is Local-The Politics and Science of Regional Climate Impacts. Contaminated Motives Essay -- essays research papers fc
Contaminated Motives The very essence of money creates an urge of human nature to obtain it, and have an excess of it. Fame and money go hand in hand; if you have one, you have the other. One also must understand that money equals power; people aspire to money. When people come into wealth and begin rising to the top of the social ladder, history dictates they usually become corrupted, and sometimes compromise their personal values. Do they believe this is for the common good, or merely for personal benefit? In the novels Great Expectations and The Great Gatsby, the protagonists, Pip and Jay Gatsby respectively, believe their prospers are used for the common good, but in reality many values are being compromised. The clichà ©, “Money cannot buy happiness'; exemplifies the opposite of what Pip and Gatsby believe, in that both utilize their money in what they believe to be a valiant attempt to bring the women they love into their lives. Along the way to achieving this “goal';, they violated et hics, which in turn changed them as people. Although money serves as a driving force for individuals, it does not counter the negative effects that are induced during the process. Therefore, money is the root of all evil. à à à à à à à à à à Despite the two novels possessing slight differences, they coincide in many aspects. When Pip acquires the money from the unknown benefactor, he moves away under Jaggers guidance and barely ever returns to his hometown. In the beginning, his reasons for coming back were to visit Joe, Biddy, and Miss Havisham, but eventually he changes and seeing the people previously so important to him appears to become a chore. This is ironic because not even a year ago he looked up to Joe, and regarded him as a father, now he refuses to see him on account of Joe being a common blacksmith. This is one of the first changes that we see in Pip after his knowledge that he will have “great expectations'; and become educated. Pip’s entire reason for becoming a gentleman is to attract Estella, and make her return the feelings of love that he holds for her. Ultimately, it appears that Pip is willing to cast away his old life and friends, to become a gentleman and, in essence , obtain Estella. This perfectly illustrates an immense change in Pip when he compromises his beliefs to... ...scholarships from all over the country. Today, we see his persistent acts to be different via tattoos, hair dyes, and many antics. The point is that Dennis Rodman strived to be uncommon just like Pip. The only difference is, they achieved their goals in vastly different ways and the results were extremely different. à à à à à In both cases, money appeared to be a catalyst in order to achieve public stature. Pip and Gatsby utilized money and prestige as a means of obtaining the women they desired. Everybody wishes to be rich and famous at one point in life, but few actually achieve it. History imparts us with evidence that money cannot buy happiness, but rather can corrupt peoples morals, and ethics. In conclusion, happiness that lies within is far greater than any superficial, temporary happiness that money can purchase. 1228 words Works Cited Dickens, Charles. “Great Expectations'; Penguin Classics, 1996 Fitzgerald, F. Analysis OR Selecting a Windows 7 Edition Essay
The Current Corporation has 8 Workstations that are running 1GB of memory, rocking an awesome 1.8 gigahertz Cpuââ¬â¢s. The 3 computers located in the Warehouse are running sluggish when pulling from the Access Server located in the Main office across town. The company needs software upgrade and possible a hardware upgrade to make this run efficiently. The Last 5 Workstation are located by the server and mostly run Windows Office applications. First thing we have to determine is if the corporation would like to upgrade their hardware. Which in this case sounds like a better option; but if they are not willing to upgrade hardware then we will select the Windows System that isnââ¬â¢t going to break them but still able to do what they are intending it to do with minimal cost. In retrospect the Hardware Meets the minim requirement to run all 5 Windows 7 versions; I would go for Windows Enterprise because it has the Additional features include support for Multilingual User Interface (MUI) packages, BitLocker Drive Encryption, and UNIX application support. Not available through retail or OEM channels, this edition is distributed through Microsoft Software Assurance (SA). As a result it includes several SA-only benefits, including a license allowing the operating of diskless nodes (diskless PCs) and activation via VLK. Please with Enterprise you can use it on multiple workstations under one Purchased license. So if the company ever wants toà add more workstation it would not require the purchase of another operating system. And I would even suggest that even if they did not want to upgrade the server hardware so that could help with the sluggish performance across town in there warehouse. When it comes to implementing the Plan I would do a clean wipe of the all the workstations, I would perform backs of all data they need to save; I find that this would the best because it is Windows Enterprise recommends a clean install. I would also do this to help limit the amount of possible data corruption that could accrue. But sense Windows 7 Enterprise calls for a clean install. I would do that.
